Product Review: Dymatize Elite Whey
Type: whey protein
Price on Allstarhealth.com: $32.50 for 5 lbs./73 servings
IMHO: First off just let me say I’ll never be reviewing the effectiveness of a protein supplement. I know this sounds completely counterintuitive, but for me it’s just too difficult to gauge whether any one protein product is more or less effective than any other. For me whey is whey (if the nutritional facts on the label are to be trusted), so I never really go in for the more sensational claims as to what makes everyone’s products better than everyone else’s. This being said, I think Dymatize’s whey just might end up my protein of choice.
First off there’s the price, which to date is the cheapest 5 lbs. of protein I’ve been able to find out there so far, almost a full $10 cheaper than my previous protein of choice from Cytosport. But would I be getting the same amount of protein in total as I did from Cytosport? The answer is yes (1,752 g of protein from Dymatize vs. 1,751 from Cytosport), but in addition I’m getting it at almost a full 1,000 LESS total calories than I did from Cytosport (8,322 for a tub of Dymatize vs. 9.270 for Cytosport). This means you get a whole lot of protein at 24 g per serving for very few calories in between.
This is cool and all but aside from this I’d have to say my second most important factor in considering any protein product would be the taste. Normally I’d say taste doesn’t matter all that much and that if you really want the benefits you should be willing to put aside a little discomfort from your taste buds, but I always think back to my days in high school when my protein intake was sporadic at best due to the fact that I’d buy cheap-ass tubs from Wal-Mart that were both gross in taste and required an outboard boat motor to mix properly because they would so hopelessly clump up. Now with Dymatize’s whey I’d definitely say it’s one of those instances that proves you should wait a while to review any particular product you’re using, because at first I thought my tub of “Orange Dreamsicle” tasted god awful. The label on the thing boasts about its “award winning taste,” and at first I thought the only award it could garner is for “most reminiscent of my days in chemistry class growing bacteria in agar.” If you know what agar is this is an extremely harsh indictment, but after about a month of using it I’ve found that it’s really not so bad at all, and my first aversions to it were due most likely to the fact that I’d been completely spoiled by Cytosport’s legendary deliciousness and I was also mixing it with way too much water per scoop. Which brings me to the fact that when they say their product is instantized, they really really mean it. This protein is by far the best one I’ve found yet when it comes to mixability. Just a teeny tiny bit of water, about a 1/4 cup if even that, will be all you need per scoop of protein, and if you hit the sweet spot ratio the protein is perfectly fine so long as you pound it in 1 or 2 swigs, but get a little zealous with the liquid and you’ll be treated to bland protein taste hell.
So will I buy more? Pretty much yes. The stuff is dirt cheap, I love the fact that two scoops comes out to a hefty 48 g of protein with very few calories, and as for the taste it really isn’t so bad considering what you get in return.
Addendum: Since writing this review I’ve also bought “Berry Blast” and I’d have to say it’s delicious. MUCH much better than the Orange flavor, like a strawberry shake. So at the moment Elite Whey will continue to be my protein of choice.

Hey, Josh. I just bought myself a tub of this stuff. I start my P90X tomorrow. Here we go again, baby…
Ugh, six days a week. Hopefully, I can stick to this one as well as I did P90. Ciao.
Awesome, dude. I think you’ll be pleased with both the protein and P90X.
